Ira Lupu

Photographer and visual artist working between Ukraine and New York. Her practice brings together metaphor-driven imagery and rigorously researched human narratives. Through long-term projects, she examines intimacy and estrangement, trauma, power, and the politics of looking, often blurring the boundaries between documentary and fiction.

Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Manifesta Biennial, Christie’s in London and Paris, Wembley Park, and the Copenhagen Photo Festival. Lupu’s projects have received support from Magnum Photos, Aperture, and Google, with images commissioned and published by The New York Times, BBC, The Guardian, The Economist, The British Journal of Photography, Vice, Dazed, and Vogue.

Lupu has taken part in public talks and panels at institutions such as the New York Public Library, the Bronx Documentary Center, the Piedmontese Institute for the History of the Resistance, and Miami University. Her work is held in public and private collections, including the Bonnefanten Museum (Maastricht), Ethan Cohen Gallery (New York), and Van Every/Smith Galleries (Davidson). She is a member of Diversify.Photo and Women Photograph, works with Kintzing Licensing, and is represented on Artsy by Darling Pearls & Co (London). Lupu studied at the International Center of Photography in New York and Viktor Marushchenko’s School of Photography in Kyiv.
