Ukrainian photographer and videographer, known for his deeply sensitive approach to portraying the human being.
Born in Chernihiv, he has been engaged in photography since 2005. In his work, he combines documentary precision with an author’s vision focused on emotions and inner states.
Before the war, Roman mainly worked in color — that was how he saw and conveyed civilian life. The shift to black‑and‑white format became a natural change for him already during his service at the front: only in the second year of being in the army did he begin shooting on black‑and‑white film. War in color, he says, feels unnatural and creates dissonance — whereas black‑and‑white imagery allows one to focus on what is essential.
He is convinced that the eyes are the strongest instrument for conveying feelings, and the authenticity of a frame begins where a person stops “acting” in front of the camera.
For me, a good shot is a reward for being alive.
He has been active in exhibition work since 2006. His works have been shown in Ukraine (Kyiv, Lviv, Chernihiv, Donetsk, Ostroh) and abroad, including in Austria. In recent years he has worked as a videographer at Suspilne Chernihiv TV channel, as well as filming documentary and feature films.
His photographs have been published in Ukrainian media (The Ukrainians, The Reporters, Local History) and international outlets, including The New York Times and Wyborcza.pl. Zakrevskyi continues to work at the intersection of art and journalism, capturing important moments in the life of the country and its people with maximum empathy and sincerity. He is currently serving in the 12th Special Purpose Brigade “Azov” of the National Guard of Ukraine.
