The Mentorship Program for Ukrainian Documentarians is an educational program for photographers, created by the Ukrainian Association of Professionals with the support of ZMIN Foundation. The Program aims to develop quality photographic education in Ukraine, foster a photographic community, and promote dialogue between authors of different generations. We strive to engage the voices of new authors, teach them to work with their own expression, and help them be heard. The program will include four mentorship courses and a subsequent opportunity for mentees to receive micro-grant support to realize their own documentary projects.

Relevance

What is photographed today will become our history tomorrow. This statement is now more real and evident than ever before. The demand for documentary photography has grown so much over the past three years that many photographers from other genres have shifted their focus to documentary work. Photo reports from Ukraine are making the front pages of global media, which increases the need not only for quantity but also for the quality of documentary photography. Since Ukraine lacks specialized schools for documentary photography, and training mostly happens through practice, the mentorship program is an optimal means for transferring experience from the "older" generation to the "younger" generation. Improving the skills of documentary photographers is an investment in a quality contemporary archive that will tell our story to future generations.

Project Goal

By launching this project, the team aims to unite the community, restore and strengthen established connections, and involve young authors from various regions of Ukraine in the program. The online format and free participation will make the program accessible to a wide range of participants, including those who were forced to evacuate and those who are in the frontline zone or participating in the country's defense.
