According to verified data from the NUJU, as of 30 October 2025, at least 28 civilian media workers are being held in Russian captivity; Russia is also detaining at least one media worker from among those who were mobilized to defend Ukraine in the ranks of the Defence Forces of Ukraine.

Of the 75 journalists imprisoned in Russia, 27 are Ukrainian media workers from Crimea and the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, sentenced to decades in prison on charges including “participation in a terrorist organization,” “treason,” and “sabotage.”

The NUJU Information Service reports on Ukrainian civilian journalists being held captive by the Russian Federation (list updated regularly):
  1. Bessarabov Oleksii, a Ukrainian journalist and political analyst, and a former serviceman of the Ukrainian Navy. He lived in Sevastopol, worked as a correspondent for the publication “Glavred,” cooperated with the “Nomos” analytical centre, and served as deputy editor-in-chief of the journal “Black Sea Security.” Detained by the FSB on 9 November 2016 on charges of “preparing sabotage as part of an organized group” and “illegal acquisition and storage of explosives and devices committed by an organized group.” He was subjected to electric shocks. On 4 April 2019, in an evidently fabricated case, he was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment in a maximum-security penal colony.
  2. Dudka Volodymyr, a former Ukrainian naval serviceman, an occupational safety engineer, and a political analyst; he collaborated with the journal “Black Sea Security.” Detained by the FSB on 9 November 2016 on charges of “preparing sabotage as part of an organized group” and “illegal acquisition and storage of explosives and devices committed by an organized group.” He was subjected to electric shocks. On 4 April 2019, in an evidently fabricated case, he was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment in a maximum-security penal colony.
  3. Shtybykov Dmytro, a Ukrainian journalist, a reserve officer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, head of international programmes at the “Nomos” analytical centre, and deputy editor-in-chief of the journal “Black Sea Security.” Detained by the FSB on 9 November 2016 on charges of “preparing sabotage as part of an organized group,” “illegal acquisition and storage of explosives and devices committed by an organized group,” and other “crimes.” In May 2017, under coercion and threats against family members, he entered into a pre-trial agreement and admitted “guilt.” On 16 November 2017, he was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in a maximum-security penal colony. On 8 November 2021, the day he was due for release, he was arrested on charges of “treason” and convicted again. In total, he is to serve 19 years and six months in a maximum-security penal colony.
  4. Ametov Ernes, a citizen journalist who actively covered human rights violations in occupied Crimea. Arrested on 11 October 2017 on charges of participation in the Muslim organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, which Russia has designated as “terrorist.” On 16 September 2020 he was acquitted, but on 14 March 2022 the appeals court overturned the acquittal. On 29 December 2022, he was sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment.
  5. Asanov Marlen (Suleiman), a photographer, promoter of Crimean Tatar culture, and citizen journalist who actively covered searches and court proceedings. Arrested on 11 October 2017 on charges of organizing a cell of the Muslim organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, which Russia has designated as “terrorist.” He was sentenced to 19 years’ imprisonment in a maximum-security penal colony. Due to the conditions of detention, he is often ill.
  6. Ibragimov Tymur, a citizen journalist who actively covered human rights violations in occupied Crimea. Arrested on 11 October 2017 on charges of participation in the Muslim organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, which Russia has designated as “terrorist.” He was sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment in a maximum-security penal colony. He has a Group III disability and has an ocular implant that has long needed replacement.
  7. Saliiev Seiran, a citizen journalist who actively covered searches and court proceedings. Arrested on 11 October 2017 on charges of participation in the Muslim organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, which Russia has designated as “terrorist.” He was sentenced to 16 years’ imprisonment; the appeals court reduced the term to 15 years.
  8. Mustafaiev Server, a human rights defender, one of the organizers and coordinators of “Crimean Solidarity,” and a citizen journalist. He carried out systematic monitoring of the situation in Crimea and covered politically motivated court cases in the media. Arrested on 21 May 2018 on charges of participation in the Muslim organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, which Russia has designated as “terrorist.” He was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment in a maximum-security penal colony. He filed a number of lawsuits regarding the confiscation of his Quran and personal belongings, the lack of adequate medical care, and other violations by the administration of “correctional” institutions.
  9. Suleimanov Ruslan, a citizen journalist who covered human rights violations in occupied Crimea. Arrested on 27 March 2019 on charges of participation in the Muslim organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, which Russia has designated as “terrorist.” He was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment.
  10. Sheikhaliev Rustem, a citizen journalist who covered human rights violations in occupied Crimea, primarily “court” proceedings. Arrested on 27 March 2019 on charges of participation in the Muslim organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, which Russia has designated as “terrorist.” Despite serious illnesses (chronic pyelonephritis, prolapse of the right kidney, varicose veins in the legs), he was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment.
  11. Bekirov Remzi, a citizen journalist and correspondent for Grani.ru who covered high-profile cases against Crimean Tatars in occupied Crimea. Arrested on 28 March 2019 on charges of organizing the activities of a cell of the Muslim organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, which Russia has designated as “terrorist.” He was sentenced to 19 years’ imprisonment.
  12. Arifmemetov Osman, a writer and winner of literary competitions; a citizen journalist who actively covered searches and court proceedings and helped deliver parcels to the remand prison for unjustly convicted Crimean Tatars. Arrested on 28 March 2019 on charges of participation in the Muslim organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, which Russia has designated as “terrorist.” He was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment.
  13. Suleimanov Amet, a citizen journalist who covered human rights violations in occupied Crimea. Arrested on 12 March 2020 on charges of participation in the Muslim organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, which Russia has designated as “terrorist.” Despite severe heart disease (doctors recommended replacement of a heart valve), he was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment in a maximum-security penal colony. He was under house arrest, and after the verdict entered into force (from 5 April 2023) he has been imprisoned. He is held in conditions that contribute to the worsening of his illness.
  14. Akhtemov Asan, a Crimean journalist, correspondent, and assistant editor of the newspaper “Avdet.” Detained on 3 September 2021 on charges of blowing up a section of a gas pipeline near Simferopol. He was subjected to torture and psychological pressure by FSB officers. Despite the clear fabrication of “evidence,” he was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment.
  15. Tsyhipa Serhii, a civic activist and journalist from Nova Kakhovka, detained on 12 March 2022. Accused of espionage, he was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment by a decision of the occupation “Supreme Court of the Republic of Crimea” on 6 October 2023. On 14 February 2024, the appellate “court” upheld this sentence. The administration of the penal institution where he is serving his sentence systematically sends the journalist to a punishment cell.
  16. Danylovych Iryna, a Crimean nurse, trade union and civic activist, and a citizen journalist for “Crimean Process.” Abducted in Koktebel on 29 April 2022; held in a basement, she was subjected to torture and intimidation. Accused of manufacturing and possessing an improvised explosive device. She was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment, and the appellate “court” mockingly reduced her term by one month. In detention, her health has deteriorated significantly: she is losing her hearing and has suffered a stroke. Due to the lack of medical care, she went on a dry hunger strike.
  17. Ilchenko Yevhen, administrator of the Melitopol Telegram channel “Milyi Topol,” detained on 10 July 2022 and taken to Russia.
  18. Temerianov Vilen, a citizen journalist and later a journalist with Grani.ru, who actively covered human rights violations in occupied Crimea. Arrested on 11 August 2022 on charges of participation in the Muslim organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, which Russia has designated as “terrorist.” In detention, he was subjected to forced psychiatric evaluation; in addition, the journalist’s eyesight deteriorated sharply and he lost all his teeth. As of September 2025, no verdict has been issued yet; the prosecutor is seeking 13 years’ imprisonment.
  19. Levchenko Iryna, a journalist from Melitopol and a veteran of the profession, detained on 6 May 2023 together with her husband Oleksandr. What she is accused of and where she is being held are not reliably known.
  20. Levchenko Heorhii, administrator of the Telegram channel “RIA Melitopol,” arrested by the FSB in Melitopol on 20 August 2023 as a so-called “Ukrainian terrorist,” as recorded in a Russian propaganda video. The occupiers’ “Zaporizhzhia Regional Court” sentenced the journalist to 16 years’ imprisonment.
  21. Hlukhivska Anastasiia, prior to the full-scale invasion—a journalist with “RIA Melitopol,” arrested by the FSB in Melitopol on 20 August 2023, as recorded in a Russian propaganda video. Where she is being held is unknown.
  22. Hershon Vladyslav, administrator of the chat “Melitopol Is Ukraine,” detained on 20 August 2023. His relatives were informed of his detention two and a half months later. The occupiers’ “Zaporizhzhia Regional Court” sentenced the journalist to 15 years’ imprisonment.
  23. Suvorova Yana, administrator of the Telegram channel “Melitopol Is Ukraine.” Detained by Russian occupiers on 20 August 2023 in Melitopol. Along with other administrators, she was accused of justifying terrorism online and of espionage. According to “Mediazona,” she is being held in a remand prison in Taganrog.
  24. Malyshev Oleksandr , administrator of the Telegram channel “Melitopol Is Ukraine.” Detained by Russian occupiers on 1 August 2023 in Melitopol. He is accused of espionage, participation in a terrorist community, and a terrorist attack. Where he is being held is unknown.
  25. Rupchov Maksym, administrator of the Telegram channel “Melitopol Is Ukraine.” Detained by Russian occupiers on 20 August 2023 in Melitopol. He is accused of espionage, participation in a terrorist community, and a terrorist attack. Where he is being held is unknown.
  26. Osmanov Rustem, a citizen journalist who covered human rights violations in occupied Crimea. Arrested on 5 March 2024 on charges of participation in the Muslim organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, which Russia has designated as “terrorist.” The occupation court chose a measure of restraint in the form of detention.
  27. Azizov Aziz, a citizen journalist who covered human rights violations in occupied Crimea. Arrested on 5 March 2024 on charges of participation in the Muslim organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, which Russia has designated as “terrorist.” The occupation court chose a measure of restraint in the form of detention.
  28. Osmak Hennadii, a journalist from Henichesk and former editor-in-chief of the publication “Novyi Vizyt.” On 12 March 2022, he announced that he was stopping work in the media. On 7 March 2024, it became known that he had been detained for “participation in an illegal armed formation” (“promoting the terrorist battalion named after Noman Çelebicihan”). He was sentenced to three years and two months’ imprisonment.
There is also information about a journalist who was captured while serving in the Defence Forces of Ukraine:
  • Filimon Vasyl, a camera operator at the Mykolaiv branch of Suspilne Broadcasting, was drafted into the Armed Forces of Ukraine. On 15 May 2022, he was captured by the Russian Federation’s occupation forces while carrying out a combat mission in Donetsk oblast.

According to verified data from the NUJU and the International Federation of Journalists, among those killed are 21 media workers who died in the line of duty; 10 media workers are civilian victims; and 104 media representatives who were mobilized to defend Ukraine in the ranks of the Defence Forces of Ukraine.

Civilian media workers killed in the line of duty
  1. Hudenko Ihor, a Ukrainian photographer and video blogger, went missing in Kharkiv on 26 February 2022 during shelling; his body was found on 27 February 2022. According to doctors’ conclusions, his death was not violent.
  2. Sakun Yevhenii, a Ukrainian photojournalist with the publication “LIVE” and a correspondent for EFE, was killed in a missile strike on the Kyiv TV tower on 1 March 2022.
  3. Renaud Brent Anthony, an American journalist, former correspondent for The New York Times, reporter for Time, documentary filmmaker, and Peabody Award laureate, was shot by Russian soldiers at a checkpoint in Irpin on 13 March 2022.
  4. Levin Maksym, a Ukrainian photojournalist and correspondent for LB.ua and other outlets, went missing on 13 March 2022; found dead near the village of Huta-Mezhyhirska in Kyiv oblast on 1 April 2022. An investigation by Reporters Without Borders showed that he was tortured and executed.
  5. Zakrzewski Pierre, an Irish photojournalist with Fox News, was killed on 14 March 2022 together with Oleksandra Kuvshynova when their vehicle came under fire in the village of Horenka in Kyiv oblast.
  6. Kuvshynova Oleksandra, a Ukrainian journalist, fixer, and producer for Fox News, was killed on 14 March 2022 together with Pierre Zakrzewski when their vehicle came under fire in the village of Horenka in Kyiv oblast.
  7. Baulina Oksana, a Russian journalist with The Insider and an activist with Alexei Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation, was killed on 23 March 2022 during Russian shelling of Kyiv.
  8. Kvedaravičius Mantas, a Lithuanian director and documentary filmmaker, was killed on 2 April 2022 while attempting to leave Mariupol, whose life he had documented for many years.
  9. Bal Yevhen, a Ukrainian journalist, writer, veteran of the Soviet submarine fleet, and volunteer, died on 2 April 2022 after torture by Russian forces in Mariupol.
  10. Nezhyborets Roman, a Ukrainian media worker and video engineer for the Chernihiv channel “Dytynets,” was killed in the village of Yahidne near Chernihiv in early April 2022.
  11. Zamoyskyi Zoreslav, a Ukrainian journalist with the outlets “Hromada Pryirpinnia” and “Information Portal,” was found dead with signs of violent death on 13 April 2022 in Bucha, Kyiv oblast.
  12. Leclerc-Imhoff Frédéric, a French journalist with the BFMTV channel, died from shrapnel wounds on 30 May 2022 as a result of Russian shelling while covering the evacuation of civilians from Sievierodonetsk (Luhansk region).
  13. Bitik Bohdan, a Ukrainian freelancer, was killed on 26 April 2023 by a Russian bullet near the Antonivskyi Bridge in Kherson while assisting the Italian journalist Corrado Zunino.
  14. Soldin Arman, a French AFP video journalist, was killed on 9 May 2023 during a missile strike near Chasiv Yar in Donetsk oblast while preparing a TV report.
  15. Amelina Viktoriia, a Ukrainian writer and documenter of war crimes, died on 1 July 2023 from injuries sustained during a Russian missile strike on central Kramatorsk on 27 June 2023.
  16. Myroniuk Volodymyr, a Ukrainian-American freelance photojournalist, was killed while photographing a report on 25 September 2023 in Donbas near Kurdiumivka.
  17. Evans Ryan, a British security adviser for Reuters who worked as part of a team covering hostilities in Donetsk region, was killed on 24 August 2024 as a result of a Russian missile strike on the Sapphire Hotel in Kramatorsk.
  18. Roshchyna Viktoriia, a journalist with Hromadske and a freelance contributor to Ukrainska Pravda, went missing on 3 August 2023 during a trip to occupied territories to prepare materials on local residents’ lives. In April 2024, the Russian authorities acknowledged that the journalist had been detained. Negotiations were underway for her exchange. She died on 19 September 2024.
  19. Anthony Lallikan, a French photojournalist with the Hans Lucas agency, which collaborates with well-known French media. He was killed on 3 October 2025 while performing professional duties near Druzhkivka in Donetsk oblast as a result of a Russian FPV drone strike.
  20. Alona Hramova (Hubanova), a journalist from Donetsk oblast, a native of Yenakiieve, since 2021 worked as a war correspondent for Ukraine’s state foreign broadcasting channels. In 2023 she was awarded the Order of Princess Olha, III class. She was killed on 23 October 2025 in Kramatorsk as a result of a Russian Lancet drone strike on a journalists’ vehicle.
  21. Yevhen Karmazin, a camera operator from Kramatorsk, since 2022 worked for Ukraine’s foreign broadcasting TV channels. He was killed on 23 October 2025 in Kramatorsk as a result of a Russian Lancet drone strike on a journalists’ vehicle.
Journalists killed not in the line of duty
  1. Shakirov Diliierbek, a Ukrainian journalist for the weekly news magazine “Navkolo tebe” and a member of the “House of Hope” Charitable Foundation, was shot with automatic weapons on 26 February in Zelenivka, Kherson oblast.
  2. Li Pavlo, a Ukrainian actor, host on the Dom TV channel, and volunteer, was shot dead by Russian forces on 6 March 2022 in Irpin, Kyiv oblast.
  3. Diedov Viktor, a Ukrainian camera operator for the Sigma TV channel, was killed on 11 March 2022 in Mariupol as a result of shelling of a residential building.
  4. Haidar Oksana (“Ruda Pani”), a Ukrainian journalist and blogger, was killed during Russian artillery shelling of the village of Shevchenkove in Brovary district, Kyiv region, between 11 and 12 March 2022.
  5. Humianova Liliia, a Ukrainian journalist, journalism lecturer, and head of the art department at the Left Bank District House of Children’s and Youth Creativity, was killed on 19 March 2022 as a result of Russian shelling of Mariupol.
  6. Kharakoz Nataliia, a Ukrainian journalist and writer in Greek and Russian, was killed as a result of Russian bombing of Mariupol on 29 March 2022.
  7. Hlodan Valeriia, a graduate of the Faculty of Journalism at Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University, was on maternity leave; she was killed together with her mother and her three-month-old daughter on 23 April 2022 as a result of a missile strike on Odesa.
  8. Hyrych Vira, a Ukrainian journalist and producer for Radio Liberty, was killed as a result of Russian shelling of Kyiv on 28 April 2022.
  9. Datsenko Volodymyr, a Ukrainian civic activist, volunteer, and serviceman of “Aidar,” and a journalist with the outlet “Road Control Vinnytsia,” was killed on 14 July 2022 during a missile strike on Vinnytsia.
  10. Kulyk Tetiana, a journalist with Ukrinform, was killed together with her husband on 26 February 2025 as a result of a drone attack on her home in the village of Kriukivshchyna near Kyiv.

Journalists killed during military service

  1. Pushchenko Serhii, a Ukrainian artist, cultural studies specialist, journalist, and serviceman, was killed on 2 March 2022 in combat in the city of Vasylkiv, Kyiv oblast, together with his Territorial Defence brothers-in-arms.
  2. Dudar Viktor, a Ukrainian military journalist and a soldier of the 80th Air Assault Brigade, was killed on 6 March 2022 while defending the city of Mykolaiv.
  3. Lytkin Oleksandr, a Ukrainian journalist with “KNK Media,” was killed on 13 March in the settlement of Romanivka near Irpin, Kyiv oblast, as a result of Russian shelling.
  4. Chernyshev Oleksii, a Ukrainian photojournalist and frontline photographer who worked with Reuters and AFP, served in 2017–2018 and, from February 2022, again as a serviceman. He went missing on 13 March 2022 together with his friend, photojournalist Maksym Levin. He was found dead near the village of Huta-Mezhyhirska, Kyiv oblast, on 1 April 2022. An investigation found that he was executed.
  5. Yakunin Oleh, a Ukrainian journalist and editor of the Zaporizhzhia website misto.zp.ua, and a serviceman, was killed on 18 March 2022.
  6. Kotsukon Oleksandr, a Ukrainian journalist, a military press service worker, a fighter with the Azov Regiment, and a student of the Department of Journalism, Advertising and PR Technologies at Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University of Cherkasy, was killed on 22 March 2022 while defending Mariupol.
  7. Oliinyk Yurii, a Ukrainian camera operator and photographer with Channel 24 and a serviceman, was killed on 23 March 2022 in fighting near Popasna, Luhansk oblast.
  8. Zaiikovskyi Serhii, a Ukrainian historian, translator, publicist, and serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 24 March 2022 near Kyiv.
  9. Kotenko Denys, a Ukrainian journalist and a press service staff member at the Ministry for Veterans Affairs, was killed on 24 March 2022 in combat with Russian occupiers near Kyiv.
  10. Medynskyi Maksym, a Ukrainian journalist, a press service staff member at the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine, and a lieutenant in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 29 April 2022 near Kharkiv as a result of occupiers’ artillery shelling.
  11. Makhov Oleksandr, a Ukrainian journalist with the TV channels “Ukraina,” “Ukraina24,” and “Dom,” a veteran of the war in Donbas, and a serviceman, was killed in combat near Izium, Kharkiv oblast, on 4 May 2022.
  12. Starynets Yevhen, a Ukrainian media professional, a manager at Suspilne Cherkasy, and one of the founders of Suspilne in Cherkasy oblast, was killed on 30 April 2022 in the battle for Popasna.
  13. Kits Kostiantyn, a Ukrainian photographer and video camera operator with the Lutsk channel “Avers,” and a soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed in Donetsk oblast on 17 May 2022 as a result of artillery shelling.
  14. Zhuk Roman, a Ukrainian photographer and videographer from Mukachevo and one of the founders of the volunteer project “Chysto.de,” and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 26 May 2022.
  15. Derekh Vitalii, a Ukrainian journalist and correspondent for Ternopil media outlets, junior sergeant, and commander of an anti-tank squad of the 1st Separate Special Purpose Brigade named after Ivan Bohun of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 28 May 2022 near the city of Popasna, Luhansk oblast, as a result of an airstrike.
  16. Chubashev Oleksii, a Ukrainian journalist, war correspondent, author and host of the military programme “Rekrut.UA,” and former head of Army FM, was killed at the front on 10 June 2022 while defending Sievierodonetsk.
  17. Gulamov Abdulkarim (Karim), a Ukrainian journalist, a TV presenter on the M2 channel, and a serviceman, was killed on 17 July 2022, reportedly during shelling.
  18. Rachok Mykola, a Ukrainian journalist, author and news editor for the publication “InfoCar,” was killed on 21 July 2022 in combat with Wagner forces.
  19. Yurchenko Oleksii, a Ukrainian journalist and camera operator with the Pryamyi TV channel, and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 8 September 2022 during the liberation of Balakliia, Kharkiv oblast.
  20. Shemchuk Oleh, a Ukrainian investigative journalist from Zaporizhzhia and a machine gunner in the 53rd Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 15 September 2022 in the Bakhmut sector as a result of shrapnel wounds. His body was recovered from the battlefield, and DNA testing was conducted with a significant delay. He was buried on 4 April 2024.
  21. Shypovskyi Dmytro, a Ukrainian TV and film camera operator who in recent years worked with “Privat TV: Kharkiv” and the Al Jazeera channel, and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 21 September 2022 during mortar shelling by Russian occupiers near the village of Druzhba, Donetsk oblast.
  22. Leliavskyi Yurii, a Ukrainian journalist and television professional, captain in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and head of public affairs for the 80th Separate Air Assault Brigade of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 28 September 2022 in combat with Russian occupiers.
  23. Silkin Serhii, a Ukrainian media professional and former sound engineer at Suspilne Ivano-Frankivsk, and a soldier of the 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade, was killed on 17 October 2022 in combat near Bakhmut, Donetsk oblast.
  24. Yavorskyi Vasyl, a director at the TV channels “Pershyi Zakhidnyi” and “Espreso,” and a serviceman of the 103rd Separate Brigade of the Territorial Defence Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 21 October 2022 as a result of artillery shelling.
  25. Zahoruiko Andrii, a journalist and director at the “Kyiv” TV channel, and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 3 November 2022 in the settlement of Spirne near Bakhmut as a result of mortar and artillery shelling.
  26. Dzikovskyi Vladyslav, a system administrator for the “Detector Media” outlet, a serviceman, and a senior machine gunner on an armoured vehicle, went missing between Kreminna and Serebrianka on 13 December 2022. In early April 2023, it became known that he had been killed.
  27. Kolomiiets Anton, a television professional from Kherson and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 20 December 2022 near Bakhmut as a result of artillery shelling.
  28. Kuzenkov Oleksandr, a Ukrainian serviceman, a graduate of the Faculty of Journalism at Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University, and the author of the book “The Last Smiles of Ilovaisk,” was killed on 20 December 2022 in combat near Bakhmut.
  29. Hulevych Yevhen, a Lviv journalist and cultural studies specialist, head of the Centre for Humanities Research at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, and a soldier of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed near Bakhmut on 31 December 2022.
  30. Kudriavtsev Dmytro, a Ukrainian serviceman and former news feed editor at the Fakty ICTV website, was killed during a missile strike on 25 January 2023 near the village of Vodiane, near Donetsk.
  31. Terokhin Ihor, an Odesa journalist (who worked at TRK RIAK and with the “Hlas Media Group” team), writer, restaurateur, and a soldier of the 126th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 23 January 2023 in Kherson oblast.
  32. Tymoshenko Pavlo, a camera operator at the Cherkasy bureau of the Inter TV channel and a Territorial Defence serviceman, was killed on 5 February 2023 near Vuhledar.
  33. Klymenko Serhii, a staff member of the technical department at Suspilne Kherson and a Ukrainian serviceman, was killed on 5 February 2023 in combat in Marinka, Donetsk oblast.
  34. Borys Oleksii, a journalist with “Yurydychna Hazeta” (Legal Newspaper) and a soldier of the 58th Brigade, was killed on 9 February 2023.
  35. Olkhovyk Oleksii, a camera operator with Suspilne and a Ukrainian serviceman, was killed as a result of a fatal wound, reportedly during a small-arms engagement on 13 March 2023.
  36. Shapochka Yaroslav, a Kyiv journalist, a correspondent for “Fakty,” and a documentary filmmaker, and a soldier of the 207th Battalion of the 241st Territorial Defence Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, went missing on 21 March 2023 during an assault on enemy positions near Bakhmut. On 11 February 2025, it was reported that DNA testing had confirmed his death.
  37. Tsakhniv Oleksandr, an investigative journalist with the “Vchasno” news agency from Pokrovsk, Donetsk oblast, and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 25 March 2023 during shelling in the Bakhmut sector.
  38. Boiko Andrii, a former camera operator at TRK “Vezha,” co-founder of the creative agency YANG.agency, and commander of a rifle platoon of the 102nd Separate Brigade named after Dmytro Vitovskyi, was killed on 6 April 2023 during shelling near Huliaipole, Zaporizhzhia oblast.
  39. Siryk Dmytro, a radio host at Suspilne and a rifleman-sniper in a mechanized battalion, was killed on 20 April 2023 during artillery shelling near Avdiivka, Donetsk oblast.
  40. Bondarenko Oleksandr, a journalist with BBC Ukraine and TRK Ukraina, a communications professional, and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed in April 2023 in combat near Kreminna, Luhansk oblast.
  41. Mukan Volodymyr, a journalist with “Gazeta po-ukrainsky,” the “Kraina” magazine, and the Gazeta.ua portal; junior sergeant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 29 April 2023 while carrying out a combat mission near Bakhmut, Donetsk oblast.
  42. Kryvyi Denys, a nature photographer and the author of numerous photo publications in the media, and a serviceman of the Special Operations Forces, was killed on 11 May 2023 in the battles for Bakhmut.
  43. Kuzminskyi Ivan, a researcher of early Ukrainian music, PhD, director at the children’s TV channel “Maliatko TV,” and a serviceman, was killed on 17 May 2023 in combat near the settlement of Dibrova in Luhansk oblast.
  44. Osiievskyi Yevhen, a journalist and contributor to “Kunsht” and “Spilne,” and a serviceman, was killed on 22 May 2023 in combat near Bakhmut.
  45. Petrov Viktor, the first editor-in-chief of the “Sykhiv Media” online outlet, and a serviceman, was killed on 29 May 2023 in fighting in the Bakhmut sector.
  46. Tsuruikin Petro, a television journalist, editor-in-chief of the STB project “One for All,” and a presenter on the Kyiv Live channel, and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, went missing on 4 June 2023. His death was confirmed and officially announced on 18 March 2024.
  47. Chornomaz Roman, a photographer and journalist from Uman, Cherkasy oblast, and a sniper in the “Svoboda” Battalion of the National Guard of Ukraine, was killed on 13 June 2023 in combat in the Bakhmut sector.
  48. Shulha Ivan, a sound engineer at the STB TV channel, a musician, and a serviceman of the 241st Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 14 June 2023 near the village of Zakitne, Kramatorsk district, Donetsk oblast.
  49. Klitnyi Anton, a journalist with the “StopKor” news portal, founder of the “25.info” news agency, a civic activist, and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 25 June 2023 from shrapnel wounds in combat near Orikhiv.
  50. Schwartzman Maksym, a photojournalist with the Chernivtsi media agency ACC and a soldier of the Chernivtsi Territorial Defence, was killed in the Bakhmut sector during an offensive engagement on 15 July 2023.
  51. Hnitetskyi Kostiantyn, a camera operator with Suspilne from Rivne and a soldier of the Defence Forces of Ukraine, was killed as a result of mortar fire on 16 July 2023 near Dibrova in Luhansk oblast.
  52. Rybakov Dmytro, an economic analyst; a journalist with the Tonis TV channel; an author of publications in LB.ua; an editor and journalist at Forbes Ukraine and Chas News; PhD in History; and a platoon commander in the 47th Mechanized Brigade “Mahura,” was killed during an offensive engagement on 17 July 2023 in the Melitopol sector.
  53. Zakharov Ihor, a TV camera operator who worked for the “Ukraina” and 1+1 TV channels and joined the National Guard of Ukraine after the start of the war, went missing on 1 August 2023 near Yampil, Donetsk oblast. After his death was confirmed and his body identified, he was buried on 19 September 2024.
  54. Sinchenko Dmytro, a journalist and blogger from Kropyvnytskyi, contributor to The Ukrainian Week, Radio Liberty, and other outlets; a civic activist; and a serviceman of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army, went missing in late August 2023. In early March 2024, DNA testing confirmed his death.
  55. Kryshtal Andrii, editor-in-chief of the Lviv newspaper “Samooborona” and a serviceman of the 103rd Separate Territorial Defence Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. After sustaining severe injuries, he underwent treatment. He died on 27 September 2023.
  56. Davydiuk Taras, founder and editor-in-chief of the “Horyn.info” outlet from Rivne oblast, and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 3 November 2023 on the outskirts of Robotyne, Zaporizhzhia oblast, as a result of an attack by an enemy strike drone.
  57. Yaremenko Dmytro, a native of Mariupol and a second-year Journalism student at Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi State Pedagogical University, volunteered to join Ukraine’s Defence Forces in August 2023. He served in the 12th Special Purpose Brigade “Azov” named after Dmytro Vyshnevetskyi of the National Guard of Ukraine, and was killed as a result of mortar shelling in the Sievierodonetsk sector on 13 November 2023.
  58. Popov Oleksandr, a former camera operator at Suspilne Mykolaiv and a serviceman of the 95th Separate Air Assault Brigade, was killed on 22 November 2023 while defending Kupiansk, Kharkiv oblast.
  59. Andreiev Oleksii, a former camera operator at Mariupol’s TB7 and “Sigma” TV, and a former Azovstal employee. Since the start of the full-scale war, he served in Ukraine’s Defence Forces. He went missing on 29 November 2023 in the village of Bohdanivka, Bakhmut district; after his body was identified, he was buried in Chernivtsi on 2 November 2024.
  60. Yatsiuk Denys, a Ukrainian serviceman, a former camera operator with Dnipro’s “Channel 51,” and a member of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, was killed on 14 December 2023 near Avdiivka, Donetsk oblast.
  61. Riazhskykh Roman, a Ukrainian journalist and copywriter, and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was seriously wounded during artillery shelling near Marinka, Donetsk oblast, on 4 January 2024. He died on 6 January 2024 at the Mechnikov Dnipropetrovsk Regional Clinical Hospital.
  62. Kryvtsov Maksym, a Ukrainian poet from Rivne, a media professional, and a junior sergeant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 7 January 2024.
  63. Petrenko Volodymyr, a journalist and librarian from Malyn, Zhytomyr oblast, and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed as a result of mortar shelling on 22 February 2024 near the village of Synkivka in Kharkiv oblast.
  64. Yakovenko Anton, an editing director at the XSport TV channel originally from Kirovohrad oblast, and a mortar operator in the 72nd Separate Brigade named after the Black Zaporozhians, was killed on 26 February 2024 near Vuhledar.
  65. Samchuk Oles, a graduate of the Institute of Journalism at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv originally from Rivne oblast, was mobilized into the Armed Forces of Ukraine immediately after graduating in 2023. He was killed while carrying out a combat mission on 11 March 2024 near Kreminna.
  66. Oranskyi Mykola, an OB van engineer at Hromadske and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed while carrying out a combat mission on 22 March 2024 near Robotyne, Zaporizhzhia oblast.
  67. Topchii Andrii, a journalist with the “Fakty” publication, a participant in the ATO/JFO and the full-scale war, and a combat medic, was killed on 20 April 2024 while carrying out a combat mission near Robotyne, Zaporizhzhia oblast.
  68. Pushkaruk Alla, a journalist for “Ukrainskyi Tyzhden” and “Chytomo,” a journalist and photographer with the Ukrainian Volunteer Corps, and later a mortar operator. Originally from Volyn. She was killed on 25 April 2024 in Donetsk oblast as a result of a missile strike.
  69. Siliuk Yurii, a TV camera operator for Volyn Television and later Hromadske.Volyn (Lutsk), and a Territorial Defence serviceman, was killed on 26 April 2024 while carrying out a combat mission near Arkhanhelske in Donetsk oblast.
  70. Mashlai Oleksandr, a former editor-in-chief of the “Pravyi Postup” outlet and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 7 May 2024 while carrying out a combat mission in the Avdiivka sector.
  71. Tsybukh Iryna, a Ukrainian journalist from Lviv, a project manager at Suspilne, and a “Hospitallers” paramedic, was killed on 29 May 2024 during a rotation in the Kharkiv sector. On 26 February 2025, she was awarded the title Hero of Ukraine (posthumously).
  72. Fedosenko Arsen, a photographer with the Media Centre of the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s Strategic Communications Directorate, a captain in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who documented war crimes, was killed on 10 June 2024 in Kharkiv oblast as a result of an aerial bomb strike.
  73. Sapuha Oleksii, an ornithologist photographer from Mykolaiv and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed in Donetsk oblast on 30 July 2024.
  74. Chernyshov Volodymyr, a former camera operator for several TV channels in Kirovohrad oblast and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 4 August 2024 in Myrnohrad as a result of a blast injury caused by an explosive device.
  75. Buchak Andrii, a former staff member of the Luhansk advertising and information newspaper “Kurier,” who served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine since 2014, had been considered missing since 13 August 2024. On 24 November 2024, it was reported that he had been killed.
  76. Zatula Bohdan, a Kharkiv journalist with Novyny.LIVE, was mobilized on 31 July 2024 and was killed on 26 August 2024 during shelling of a training centre.
  77. Sarelo Oleh, an editing director for the media project “Real Story,” and a serviceman of the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed during mortar shelling near Vodiane in Volnovakha district, Donetsk oblast, on 27 August 2024.
  78. Parkhomenko Pavlo, a camera operator at the Pryamyi TV channel and a volunteer serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed in the Kurakhove sector on 5 September 2024.
  79. Prysyazhniuk Pavlo, a designer at Burda Media Ukraine and a volunteer serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed near Pokrovsk on 9 September 2024.
  80. Zhytnytskyi Stanislav, a line producer at STB and Novyi Kanal, junior sergeant of the Separate Presidential Brigade named after Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky, was killed while carrying out a combat mission in Kursk oblast of the Russian Federation on 24 September 2024.
  81. Markevych Bohdan, a lecturer at the Faculty of Journalism of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and a military medic, was killed as a result of shelling of St Panteleimon Clinical Hospital in Sumy on 28 September 2024.
  82. Levytskyi Yaroslav, a camera operator with the regional bureau of Channel 5 and TRK “ACC” in Chernivtsi, joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the beginning of the full-scale war and went missing in the Pokrovsk sector in early November 2024. DNA testing confirmed his death on 8 September 2025.
  83. Bohuslavskyi Dmytro, head of the NUJU Journalists’ Fund, a long-time press service staff member at the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS), and an officer in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 15 November 2024 on the southern front.
  84. Kulyk (Herasymovych) Myroslav, a poet, screenwriter, and journalist from Lutsk; a serviceman of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed in the Avdiivka sector on 25 November 2024.
  85. Androsovych Andrii, a video camera operator at the “Telebachennia Hromady” TV channel in the Yuzhne community of Odesa oblast; a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and an operator in the Unmanned Aviation Systems Unit, died on 18 December 2024 from severe injuries sustained while carrying out a combat mission in Sumy oblast.
  86. Vovk Anton, a senior music editor at Starlight Production and a junior sergeant in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, served in the 95th Separate Air Assault Brigade during fighting in Kursk oblast. He was killed on 28 December 2024 while carrying out a combat mission.
  87. Hanushchak Ruslan, a photographer and war correspondent; a staff member of Azov’s press service; later a TV camera operator with TSN; during the full-scale war, a soldier of the 92nd Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was killed on 11 January 2025 in Kursk oblast.
  88. Zaiats Bohdan, deputy head of the TV news editorial office at the “Novyi Chernihiv” TV channel, an officer in Ukraine’s Defence Forces, was killed on 30 January 2025 in the Donetsk sector as a result of shelling of Ukrainian positions.
  89. Kirpik Yurii, executive producer of Starlight Media projects including “Zyvazheni ta shchaslyvi” (The Biggest Loser), “Tantsiuiut vsi!” (So You Think You Can Dance), “Budynochok na shchastia” (Home for Happiness), and others. From the first days of the war, he joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine and served in the 711th Separate Demining Brigade of the State Special Transport Service, holding the rank of major. He was killed while carrying out a combat mission in Kharkiv oblast. His death became known on 13 March 2025.
  90. Shybalov Artur, originally from Donbas; a former camera operator and editor at the PTV UA TV channel in Poltava; a serviceman of the Air Assault Forces, was killed while carrying out a combat mission in Kursk oblast on 13 March 2025.
  91. Polikevych Kyrylo, a videographer with Suspilne Dnipro and a grenadier in the motorized infantry battalion of the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade named after the Black Zaporozhians, was killed on 16 March 2025 near Preobrazhenka, Pokrovsk district, Donetsk oblast.
  92. Biendikov Dmytro, a editor at TSN.ua and a serviceman of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, originally from Sievierodonetsk, was killed on 18 March 2025 while carrying out a combat mission in Luhansk oblast.
  93. Lysenko Bohdan, a journalist from Zhytomyr who contributed to the outlets Fakty, KP v Ukraini, Subota, and Ekho, and an officer in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed during shelling in the Zaporizhzhia sector on 13 April 2025.
  94. Kotsur Volodymyr, a sports journalist originally from Rivne oblast who worked for Sport-Express v Ukraini, Ukrainskyi Futbol, and Komanda, served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine from 2022. His death became known on 29 April 2025.
  95. Kobrzhytskyi Viacheslav, a motorsport commentator for the Setanta Sports TV company and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed while carrying out a combat mission in Donetsk oblast. His death became known on 1 May 2025.
  96. Dovbush Vasyl, a former editor and video designer at TRK “Liuks,” and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 6 May 2025 while carrying out a combat mission in Sumy oblast.
  97. Nelipa Maksym, a TV presenter and actor, a member of “Dizel Show,” and a serviceman of Ukraine’s Defence Forces, was killed on 12 May 2025 while carrying out a combat mission.
  98. Chernykh Petro, a journalist with the UNIAN news agency; a press service staff member at Energoatom; a contributor to Mind.ua; a volunteer; and, from 2022, a volunteer soldier in the 112th Brigade of the Territorial Defence Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As a result of concussions, Petro developed a severe illness, and died on 27 May 2025.
  99. Hozhelak Krzysztof, a Polish journalist and founder of the “Nasze Kielce” portal, and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 30 May 2025.
  100. Voloboiev Vladyslav, a journalist with the Kryvyi Rih outlet “Puls,” and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed during shelling of an Army training range in Dnipropetrovsk oblast on 1 June 2025.
  101. Holiachenko Oleksandr, a journalist with the outlet “Nash Kyiv,” and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed on 3 September 2025.
  102. Ponomarenko Denys, a camera operator and director of photography for the projects “X-Factor,” “Ukraine’s Got Talent,” and many others. In February 2022, he volunteered to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine and served as the commander of a mortar crew. He was killed on 7 September 2025 in Kharkiv oblast while carrying out a combat mission.
  103. Budai Bohdan, originally from Kryvyi Rih, worked in Vinnytsia at the outlet “Vezha”; after being mobilized, he served as a lieutenant in the 144th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was killed while carrying out his duties on 26 September 2025.
  104. Urvantsev Oleksandr, a camera operator with the Chernihiv channel “Dytynets,” after being mobilized in October 2024 served as a UAV operator. He was killed in early October 2025 in Kharkiv oblast while carrying out a combat mission.
