In November, TIME Magazine posted the 100 best photos this year.

“It became clear in 2023, a year dominated by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence imagery, that photojournalism is more important than ever,” writes photo editor Catherine Pomerantz.

The footage highlights the landmark events and turning points of the passing year. The selection includes photos of the aftermath of the earthquake in Turkey and the collision of passenger trains in India, the coronation of the new British monarch, Charles III, photos of the affected areas of Israel by Hamas and numerous wounded civilians in the Gaza Strip. as well as from the Russian-Ukrainian war.

This year, 9 photos from Ukraine were included in the selection of TIME. Last year, the number of photos from Ukraine was much higher — namely 25 shots from leading Ukrainian and foreign photographers. The photos show children injured in the war, soldiers on the front line, medical workers at the stabilization post and civilians fleeing from the missile attack of the Russian Federation.

“Like every photographer, I have photographed many burials of Ukrainian servicemen. My colleagues and I went to Pervomaisk on the editorial task - to film the farewell ceremony with the fighter, - says the author of the photo from the TIME collection Oleksandr Magula. “We heard a characteristic rustle in the sky, after which there was an explosion and panic began. The first thing I saw was a mom with two girls running scared just at me. At that point, I made the first shots.”
