On Journalist's Day, the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers honors the memory of all media workers killed in the Russian-Ukrainian war, as well as remembers colleagues who are illegally held captive by the enemy.
Since 2014, the Russians have been arresting and kidnapping Ukrainian media in the temporarily occupied territories.
As of January 2025, at least 31 media workers are imprisoned in the Russian Federation or in the temporarily occupied territories. This is reported by National Union of Journalists.
“Russia continues to grossly violate international humanitarian law by illegally holding Ukrainian journalists captive,” NJU Chairman Serhiy Tomilenko said. “This is a war crime for which the aggressor must be punished. Our colleagues are in captivity solely because of their professional activities — they did their duty by informing the world about Russian aggression against Ukraine. The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine calls on the international community to increase pressure on the Russian Federation for the immediate release of all captured media representatives. Every day in Russian captivity is a day of torture and inhuman treatment of our colleagues. At least one Ukrainian journalist — Viktoriia Roshchyna — did not survive these tortures and died in captivity.
Recall, on February 14, 2025, Russia transferred the body of a journalist from captivity to Ukraine Victoria Roshchynawhich was designated in the documents as “unidentified male person” and contained a single obscure label: SPAS. During the examination, it turned out that some internal organs were missing. In particular, the brain, eyeballs, and part of the trachea. The head of the war department of the Prosecutor General's Office Yuri Belousov said during a briefing that due to the condition of the body and mummification, it was not possible to establish the cause of death of journalist Victoria Roshchyna, who died in Russian captivity.
