The Bearing Witness: Documenting War Crimes in Mariupol, Ukraine

Photo exhibition in association with the upcoming FRONTLINE PBS and Associated Press. The exhibition featured the works of Ukrainian documentarians, members of the UAPP and Pulitzer Prize laureates – Mstyslav Chernov and Yevhen Maloletka.

 

«There were no funerals. There were no public gatherings to honor those who died during Russia's relentless attacks on the port city of Mariupol, which became a symbol of Ukraine's fierce resistance. Only fraternal graves spoke of the city under siege».

They are fighting for us too

UAPP in collaboration with colleagues from the Association of Professional Photographers of the Czech Republic and the Federation of European Photographers, opened a series of exhibition projects of UAPP participants titled 'They are fighting for us' in the Czech Republic, Belgium and USA.

The exhibition featured over 200 photographs documenting the expressive evidence of Russian aggression and genocide, the lives of ordinary people in war, and the courageous struggle of the Ukrainian people not only for their own freedom but for the freedom of the whole world.

BAKHMUTH - THE FACE OF GENOCIDE (1942-2022)

On the anniversary of the battle for Bakhmut, we made a retrospective of the tragedy of the Second World War and nowadays, united by the common theme of two genocides.

In partnership with Babyn Yar this exhibition presents a retrospective of the past and present tragedies in Bakhmut. Photographs, videos, archival documents and eyewitness memories reveal a gruesome picture of genocide that has the same face — a totalitarian regime with a hateful ideology.

The exhibition "The Siege of Mariupol - The last journalists in the occupied city"

As part of this year's Czech Photo festival, on October 12, an exhibition titled "The Siege of Mariupol - The Last Journalists in the Occupied City" was opened at the Gallery of the Czech Photo Center in Prague. It showcases globally renowned works by Mstyslav Chernov and Yevhen Maloletka.

The project was implemented by the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP) in collaboration with Czech Photo and the Association of Professional Photographers of the Czech Republic (APF).

Exhibition "Russian War Crimes" in New York

On September 22, 2022, the project "Russian War Crimes" was opened at the Ukrainian Institute of America in New York. The exhibition was created by the Viktor Pinchuk Foundation and PinchukArtCentre in collaboration with the Office of the President of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the "Ukraine. Five in the Morning" Coalition, and the Ukrainian Institute of America.

Exhibition "Spalah. Ukrainian photography today"

On September 29, in the Ukrainian House in Kyiv, the opening of the photo exhibition "Spalah. Ukrainian Photography Today" took place. The project was realized by the National Center "Ukrainian House" and the NGO "Platform of Cultural Initiatives" in collaboration with the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers and with the support of the Press, Education, and Culture Section of the US Embassy in Ukraine.

Almost 50 authors participated in the project, presenting over 500 works that have been created since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion into Ukraine.

Exhibition "Russian War Crimes" at Pinchuk art center

On July 17, an exhibition titled "When Faith Moves Mountains" was opened at PinchukArtCentre, and it incorporated the project "Russian War Crimes".

The project was created by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation and PinchukArtCentre in collaboration with the Office of the President of Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the "Ukrainska Pravda" publication, and the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers. It was first presented on May 23, 2022, during the World Economic Forum in Davos to draw the global community's attention to the horrific reality of Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Exhibition "Mariupol"

As part of the annual WARM Festival 2022 in Sarajevo, the "Mariupol" exhibition was unveiled, featuring the works of Mstyslav Chernov and Yevhen Maloletka. These were captured from the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion on February 24 until mid-March. The aftermath of bombings on a maternity hospital and residential areas, ruins, mass burials, residents of the city hiding in basements and shelters, overcrowded hospitals - the documentary photographers managed to capture the atrocities of the Russian army and present them to the world.

Exhibition "Russian War Crimes House" Davos 2022

In collaboration with the Viktor Pinchuk Foundation, PinchukArtCentre, the Office of the President of Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and the online publication "Ukrainska Pravda", the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP) realized a project that presented an exhibition about Russia's war crimes in Ukraine. The opening of the exhibition "Russian War Crimes House" took place on May 23, 2022, in Davos, Switzerland.

Exhibition "The price of freedom"

The Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP), in collaboration with the Association of Ukrainians in Finland, the media project Ukraїner, and individual photographers, executed the exhibition "The Cost of Freedom", which was opened on June 11, 2022, at the Central Railway Station in Helsinki.

This exhibition showcases the human toll of Russian aggression in Ukraine. The photographs narrate stories of sorrow and losses suffered by Ukrainians, but also about mutual aid and united resistance. The display also features images of Ukraine prior to the invasion, serving as a reminder of how easily war can devastate peaceful life even in a European country in 2022.

A series of exhibitions "Tragedy of the 21st century in the centre of Europe"

The Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP), in collaboration with the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Cyprus, carried out a series of exhibitions titled "Tragedy of the 21st century in the centre of Europe". These took place in the cities of Nicosia, Sotira, and Larnaca. The events were charitable, and visitors had the opportunity to donate to the Journalism Emergency Fund, which supports journalists and photographers.

Virtual gallery: Unbreakable. Chronicles of the war in Ukraine

In the project, we study the chronicles of the war in Ukraine, which were witnessed by dozens of Ukrainian photographers. Their photos helped to create a unique artistic space that will be the starting point of a new era in the history of Ukraine and show it to the world. The virtual gallery presents both famous photos that have already become part of world history, and those that have not yet been published.

Series of exhibitions "Moments among the ruins. Documentary photographs from Ukraine. People at war"

The Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP) in collaboration with the Ukrainian Student Society "Sich" and the Honorary Consulate of Ukraine in Graz implemented a series of photo exhibitions titled "Moments Among the Ruins. Documentary Photographs from Ukraine. People at War", dedicated to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The exhibitions were displayed in the premises of the Karl-Franz University of Graz and the Graz University of Technology.

Exhibition "Ukrainian Guernica"

The Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP) in collaboration with the Bereznitsky Art Foundation implemented a charity exhibition called "Ukrainian Guernica". The opening took place on May 5, 2022, at the Factory Gallery in Tbilisi. The project was carried out with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and under the patronage of the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska.

The aim of the project is to draw attention to the war in Ukraine and to present to the world documentary evidence of unlawful aggression and war crimes by Russia.

Exhibition "This is order, SORRI"

The Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP), in collaboration with Ukrainischer Verein Mainz e.V. and photographer David Yampolsky, organized a photo exhibition dedicated to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It was presented on May 14, 2022, in the Gutleut gallery in Mainz, Germany. The Kyiv School of Photography and the National Society of Photo Artists of Ukraine also contributed to the organization of the exhibition.

Exhibition "Ukraine now: darkness vs light. Children dream about peace"

The Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP), in collaboration with the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of India, organized the exhibition "Ukraine Now: Darkness vs Light. Children Dream about Peace". Partners and partial sponsors of the exhibition included the Polish Institute in India, the pharmaceutical company "Kusum", and representatives of the Ukrainian community in India.

The main idea of the exhibition is to demonstrate the horrific consequences of Russian aggression in Ukraine, the Ukrainians' fight for freedom, and their unyielding desire for peace.

Dream Production or What a Modern Media Machine Offers

Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP) supported and funded the creation of the exhibition "Dream Production or What a Modern Media Machine Offers".
The project provides an artistic reflection of modern media reality.
This is a research-based project about the influence of mass media onto our ability to feel the world.

"Those in solitude" — a group online exhibition

The Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP) partnered with Chekachkov Photo Academy to hold a competition for the best visual diary captured during quarantine conditions. The result was a group online exhibition titled "Those in Solitude," which included the best shots taken within the framework of the contest initiated by the Chekachkov Photo Academy.

Exhibition "NA4JOPM8". Igor Chekachkov

With the support of the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP), an exhibition of our member, renowned photographer Ihor Chekachkov, took place. His photos have been published in Forbes, National Geographic, The Guardian, Le Monde, and other international media outlets. NA4JOPM8, a series of photographs, brings together images from various facets of reality: from protest events on Maidan in Kharkiv to intimate scenes from private life. However, their artistic image was completed by serendipity.
