“We made it, we're here.” Kharkiv region liberated from Russian troops in photos by Mstislav Chernov
From the end of April to the middle of May 2022, the final stage of the defense of the city of Kharkiv lasted. The main task was to push the Russian military out of the nearest outskirts of Kharkov. The offensive of Ukrainian troops took place to the north and northeast of the city. In May 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine advanced north of Kharkov and advanced to the borders with the Russian Federation. This became the key to the further liberation of the territory of the Kharkiv region. The Slobozhansky counteroffensive began in September 2022.

Toretsk is a city in the Bakhmut district of Donetsk region, located roughly 7 kilometres from the front line. Every day the occupiers shell Toretsk, as they do every Ukrainian frontline settlement. In 2014, Dzerzhynsk — now decommunized and renamed Toretsk — was a typical mining town surrounded by spoil tips. One of its mines was until recently named “St. Matrona of Moscow”; now it is simply “St. Matrona”.
