At the same time, the enemy was always blamed for the war, as they allegedly forced Russia to fight.

Drones fly over the city, Russians stand 2.5 kilometers away. Kupiansk through the lens of Ivan Samoilov
Kupyansk, known in the past as an important trading hub, has today become a symbol of struggle and destruction. Historically, the city was closely associated with trade, which is reflected even in its name - according to one version, it comes from the word “merchant”. Another version associates the name with “bumps” — peat mounds that covered the area.

The city, often called the pearl of the sea, was then on the border—between the European pro-Ukrainian future and the Russian past. In this material, we tell how the Odessa people fought for their freedom, and supplement the text with photos of the documentary filmmaker Alexander Gimanov, who witnessed these events.
