Anniversary of the Olenivka terrorist attack
The tragedy in Olenivka occurred on the night of July 29: an explosion rang out in the barrack of Correctional Colony No. 120. The day before, Ukrainian prisoners of war, including defenders of Azovstal, had been deliberately moved there. Ukraine recognized this attack as a terrorist act. As reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General in the summer of 2024, investigative actions were still ongoing without charges being filed. This war crime claimed the lives of more than 50 people, and over 140 were injured.

Death of a pregnant woman, two railway workers, and an energy specialist: overview of enemy attacks on Ukraine over the past seven days
During the week, the enemy carried out massive drone strikes on Kharkiv, launched deadly attacks on Chuhuiv and Zaporizhzhia, and shelled Sumy with artillery. In Sloviansk, a FAB hit near the maternity hospital; although no one in the hospital was injured, this strike forced the decision to close the obstetrics department — the last one still operating in Donetsk region. Across Ukraine, energy facilities, railway infrastructure, and vessels in the Black Sea came under attack. Due to enemy shelling while performing their duties, an energy worker in Kherson and two railway employees in Sumy region were killed.

In the first days of Russia’s full‑scale invasion, thousands of volunteers joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, the protracted war and enormous losses created new challenges for the state. After unsuccessful mobilization campaigns and an exhausting counteroffensive, a decision was made to reinforce the army with prisoners. As of March 2026, more than 12,000 people have joined the military and serve in specialized units called “Shkval.” Nadiia Karpova’s photo project *Beyond the Verdict* explores how war erases the boundaries between “criminal” and “hero.”

The city of Dnipro suffered a brutal strike, with 16 civilians killed; the enemy attacked the city and district again on the very day of mourning. In Donetsk region, new airstrikes on Kramatorsk and Druzhkivka brought more deaths. Occupiers shelled Kherson daily with artillery and drones, as well as remotely mined territories. Regional centers and communities in frontline and border areas also suffered.

Andrii Kasianchuk’s project is a continuation of his father’s practice, who kept a school diary of observations in 1989–1993, shortly after the Chornobyl nuclear disaster.
