The Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers, together with legal experts from the Ukrainian National Office for Intellectual Property and Innovations (UAPI/IP Office), has initiated the development of a suite of standard contract templates for photographers to use in their daily work. This package of documents will include licensing agreements, agreements on the assignment of economic rights, as well as agreements on the payment of royalties and author's remuneration. It is essential to adapt these templates to various fields of photography, as each niche has its own unique needs and operational specifics that must be addressed from a legal perspective. In addition, practical guidelines are planned to assist photographers in navigating any potential copyright disputes or challenges.

Daily terror against civilians: consequences of strikes on Kyiv, Boryspil, Odesa, and Kramatorsk
The beginning of the school year in Ukraine turned into a week of exhausting and brutal attacks. The most massive shelling targeted the Kyiv region, Odesa region, and frontline communities of Donetsk. This week among the affected sites in the capital: a railway depot, a higher education institution, and the Security Service of Ukraine building; UNESCO World Heritage sites also suffered damage. During the strikes, specialists from emergency and municipal services, as well as workers from the metallurgical sector, were killed: a State Emergency Service rescuer, two police officers, a utility worker, six railway workers, and five metallurgists. Units of the State Emergency Service and Air Defense Forces worked continuously under heavy smoke and constant risk of repeated strikes.

On the night of June 15, Russian forces carried out a massive attack on Kyiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv, using missiles and drones against residential buildings and historic landmarks. As a result of a targeted Russian strike, a large fire broke out on the roof of the Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. In Kharkiv, during the aftermath response, a repeated shelling claimed the lives of five rescuers and a civil protection specialist from the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration. The cities of Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Sloviansk, and Kramatorsk remain under daily enemy fire, while this week Russian aviation also terrorized Kharkiv and Sumy. Animals suffered from Russian aggression as well — the enemy shelled a zoo in Kharkiv and an equestrian school in Sumy region.

Darkness and cold become weapons of mass destruction: by destroying sources of light and heat, the enemy plunges entire cities into gloom. Yet the human body continues to emit warmth. In such moments, energy appears not as a network of cables and power stations, but as something inherently human. In the darkness, a person becomes the last source of light.

During the week, the enemy carried out massive drone strikes on Kharkiv, launched deadly attacks on Chuhuiv and Zaporizhzhia, and shelled Sumy with artillery. In Sloviansk, a FAB hit near the maternity hospital; although no one in the hospital was injured, this strike forced the decision to close the obstetrics department — the last one still operating in Donetsk region. Across Ukraine, energy facilities, railway infrastructure, and vessels in the Black Sea came under attack. Due to enemy shelling while performing their duties, an energy worker in Kherson and two railway employees in Sumy region were killed.

In the first days of Russia’s full‑scale invasion, thousands of volunteers joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, the protracted war and enormous losses created new challenges for the state. After unsuccessful mobilization campaigns and an exhausting counteroffensive, a decision was made to reinforce the army with prisoners. As of March 2026, more than 12,000 people have joined the military and serve in specialized units called “Shkval.” Nadiia Karpova’s photo project *Beyond the Verdict* explores how war erases the boundaries between “criminal” and “hero.”
